LEAD:
“The Riverbones: Stumbling After Eden in the Jungles of Suriname” is part travel book, part memoir, part history of an emerging nation and part personal coming-of-age story. Author Andrew Westoll fell in love with the South American country when he was a graduate student studying capuchin monkeys. His return a few years later is largely about the larger primates, those strange Homo Sapiens who also inhabit the country.
